August 30, 2026 — Numbers Game today announced Xero support for its Model Context Protocol (MCP) product for accounting firms. The launch extends the platform beyond QuickBooks Online, giving firms one controlled way to connect the client books they manage to Claude, ChatGPT, and supported MCP clients.
The core proposition is not to put an autonomous accountant in charge of a firm’s books. It is to put the expert accountant in control of Claude, with Claude helping retrieve information, investigate transactions, prepare accounting work, and surface the evidence needed for a decision.
Accounting firms work across many client companies, often across multiple accounting platforms. A general-purpose AI assistant can be helpful, but it cannot responsibly use financial data if the firm cannot define which person may access which company, which companies Claude may write to, and which companies are entirely off limits.
Numbers Game gives firms granular user and company controls. A firm can connect its approved QuickBooks Online and Xero companies, choose which users and AI clients can reach each company, permit write capability where it is appropriate, keep other companies read-only, and exclude companies from a person’s approved set entirely. The platform is designed so the firm retains the accounting judgment while Claude helps do the preparation and analysis.
“AI should make expert accountants more effective, not take their seat,” said Anelya Grant, co-founder of Numbers Game. “A firm needs to decide, at the company and user level, where Claude can help, where it may write, and where it should not be able to go at all. Xero support makes that operating model available across more of the client books firms actually manage.”
How firms can use the Numbers Game MCP
With approved connections, firm teams can use Claude, ChatGPT, or another supported MCP client to:
- Pull financial reports and investigate the transactions behind them across approved QuickBooks Online and Xero companies.
- Prepare month-end review work, including uncategorized activity, unusual transactions, vendor analysis, and supporting questions for clients.
- Compare activity across related entities and prepare transaction-level evidence for an accountant or fractional CFO.
- Prepare categorization, reconciliation, and accounting work for human approval before posting.
- Connect authorized bank accounts and credit cards, organize transaction activity in Claude, and prepare the accounting data that belongs in QuickBooks Online or Xero.
For example, an accounting manager can ask Claude to prepare a review of unusual software expense across a selected client set. The manager receives the relevant vendors and transaction context, decides whether the variance is meaningful, and determines the accounting treatment. A firm can enable the appropriate access for selected companies while excluding sensitive or out-of-scope clients.
Controls designed for an accounting firm
- Granular user and company access: Firms set access by user and by company, rather than exposing every connected client book to every AI user.
- Per-company write choices: Firms can permit write capability for selected companies and keep others read-only or excluded.
- Role-based controls: Owner, Admin, Member, and Viewer roles set boundaries for company data, dashboard actions, and operational bank information.
- Firm-readable activity logs: MCP tool calls are recorded with the relevant client, tool, result, and timing.
- Client data boundaries: Bank connections and bank-feed transaction data are restricted to authorized roles. Viewers cannot see that operational bank data or create or modify QuickBooks records.
- Books remain the system of record: QuickBooks Online and Xero remain the accounting systems of record.
The launch reflects a broader shift in accounting technology: the question is no longer whether AI can read a ledger. It is whether a firm can use AI across many client books without surrendering the controls, review, and accountability that make accounting work trustworthy.
