Dive Brief:
- Home lending software provider Dark Matter Technologies promoted Chris Medvidofsky, its VP of finance and accounting, as its CFO as part of a series of leadership moves as the business continues to advance its future growth plans, according to a Friday press release.
- As well as Medvidofsky, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based software provider also promoted two other company executives to new roles: Naming Don Oliver as its chief technology officer and Blaine Prober as its general counsel. The company said all three executives have been with the mortgage technology provider since its 2023 founding.
- The timing of the three appointments “reflects how the company has built its leadership team: supporting people’s growth within the organization when they demonstrate the experience, leadership and a customer-first mindset,” Dark Matter’s release states.
Dive Insight:
Medvidofsky first joined Dark Matter as its director of financial planning & analysis in September 2023, before taking on the VP of finance and accounting role this April, according to his LinkedIn profile. Prior to Dark Matter, he held FP&A roles during nine years at mortgage software firm Black Knight. Past roles include serving as a revenue analyst for Acosta Sales and as a relationships manager for Fidelity Investments.
The appointments are the latest leadership shifts by the fledging company, which has leaned harder on artificial intelligence to drive growth since naming its former CTO, Vikas Rao, as its CEO in April.
“We have been purposeful about how we build this leadership team, and I’m thrilled by the caliber of the leadership team we have been able to assemble,” Rao said of the three most recent appointments in a Friday statement.
In his first 100 days in the CEO seat, Rao — an alum of mortgage application processor Ellie Mae who joined Dark Matter in 2024 as its deputy chief product officer — has focused on integrating AI across the business’ products, while keeping a close eye on accuracy and reliability, according to a Sept. 3 blog post.
“We are building AI agents that assist the borrower in their application, autonomous agents that handle tasks in the background, and AI agent assistants for Loan Officers, processors, underwriters and closers,” Rao wrote, noting the company is doing “all of this while keeping the important tenets of explainability and auditability. Without these, AI is cool but would not be applicable in our regulated industry.”
Among other moves, Dark Matter in April also released an agentic AI assistant named Ask Aiva, integrated into its Empower loan origination system. The conversational AI tool enables lenders to query and receive answers to origination questions in plain language, according to the press release.
As part of its growth strategy, the business on Sept. 3 also named Salvatore Piccola as its SVP of product strategy and Gil Valera as VP of professional services, moves which “strengthen two areas central” to Dark Matter’s expansion plans, the company said. That included innovation with AI and driving seamless product adoption, according to the release.
The business has faced stumbling blocks as it tries to achieve its growth plan, including multiple rounds of layoffs last year and earlier this year, according to reports. Also in April alongside Rao’s appointment as CEO, Dark Matter said it would be laying off 5% of its workforce as it looked to align its operations with its strategic goals, HousingWire reported at the time, citing a company spokesperson.
The leadership shuffles and workforce reductions may be growing pains for the fledging company, which arose out of a deal reached in 2023 between the Federal Trade Commission and mortgage originator Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) regarding antitrust concerns surrounding the latter’s acquisition of Black Knight.
In the 2023 settlement, the FTC approved ICE’s proposed $13.1 billion acquisition of Black Knight, contingent on the divestment of certain assets — including Black Knight’s Empower loan origination platform — settling FTC charges that the merger would limit competition by combining two top mortgage technology providers, according to a release at the time.
Dark Matter Technologies was established following the required sale of assets, under the remit of its parent entity Constellation Software, to operate the Empower platform, according to reports at the time.
